Yay Kyi Lane
What is Yay Kyi Lane?
Yay Kyi Lane is a collection of art created by U Aung Maung who is a well-known watercolour artist from Myanmar. This collection showcases his masterpieces of landscape artwork of places in Myanmar and Singapore. These places include Bagan, Mandalay, Monywa, and Yangon in Myanmar and China Town, Clark Quay, Garden by the Bay, Little India and Merlion Park in Singapore. The physical gallery is currently located in Monywa at his home.
"The Merlion Park, which U Aung Maung painted during his first visit to Singapore in 2010. He had a lot of fond memories going there as he had gone together with his son and grandson. While he was painting, it had started to rain. Then, his grandson stood by and covered his grandfather with the umbrella so that he could finish his artwork. You could feel the atmosphere of some raindrops in the sky of that painting.
"I always approach to shed colour and light in my paintings. I emphasize open air painting, sketchy handling and I prefer to do the whole painting in front of the subject. I don't paint what I see but I do what I feel. My preference is the whole view, not the articles".
